Reference is made to the data collection form circulated, our sincere appreciation to your fervent response. We are in the process of creating the data base for formulation of IIESL UAE branch. If you have not forwarded your form please do the needful as soon as possible to expedite the process.

Eighty one completed forms have been received up till now out of 110 (74%) listed.

Following Q & A is forwarded to enlighten you on the information related to IIESL, process of formulation of the branch; membership benefits and the proposed activities of UAE branch.

Q1. What is IIESL?
A1. Institute of Incorporated Engineers Sri Lanka (Incorporated by parliament act no: 11 of year 2000). An organization was established in 1977 by Engineering Diplomates, by the name ACEDA (All Ceylon Engineering Diplomates Association). This was later transformed to IEDSL(Institute of Engineering Diplomates Sri Lanka) and then incorporated by an Act of Parliament of Sri Lanka in 1992, and subsequently renamed as IIESL, by another Act of Parliament in the year 2000.

Q2. Why do you need to become a member of Institute of Incorporated Engineers Sri Lanka?
A2.
Most of us have acquired considerable experience as Engineers, Technical Officers, Quantity Surveyors and in other various professions after completion of Diploma. It is very significant that your qualification and experience recognize by a professional body for career enhancements. IIESL sanction that recognition through the process of membership criterion depends on the qualification and experience. Legislative framework required for recognition has been made available by the Incorporated act no: 11 of year 2000. Once you become a member of IIESL, combination of your academic qualifications and practical experience would be recognized internationally. It is a very important phenomenon for the people working within and out side the Sri Lanka.

Q4. What is an incorporated Engineer? (IEng.)
A4. Incorporated Engineers are characterized by their ability to act as exponents of today's technology through creativity and innovation. To this end, they maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering, design, development, manufacture, construction and operation.  Incorporated Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial management and possess effective interpersonal skills. Incorporated Engineers:

  • Have knowledge of the markets.
  • Have an anticipation of developments.
  • Are able to exploit opportunities.

In the Sri Lanka, an incorporated engineer (IEng) is a professional Engineer with relevant qualification and corporate membership (Member or Fellow) of IIESL falling within the scope of incorporated engineers act . No: 11 of year 2000.

Q5. What is the current position of formulation of the UAE branch?
A5. Following are the activities to date

  • Formed an action committee comprising 16 members from various fields, emirates and organizations.
  • This committee will organize the initial activities until the general body is elected through an AGM.
  • Eng. Sisira Walaliyadda had a successful meeting with IIESL in Sri Lanka and minutes of meeting attached for your reference.
  • We are in process of creating the data base of current and prospective members. 66% achieved to date.
Note:
Success of the proposed branch rest on the membership. Hence we urge all of you to join in order to strengthen the activities. Benefits from the institution are two-pronged. Members as individuals and institution as whole. This is a win win  situation for both sides.

Q6. What are the benefits offered to the membership and proposed activities by UAE branch?

  • Obtain IIESL membership as per the criteria. Interviews and exams will be organized by proposed branch within the UAE.
  • Presentations and work shops on report writing. 
  • Presentations on management exam paper.
  • Registration as a professional body in chamber of commerce.
  • Affiliation with Society of Engineers UAE.
  • Explore the possibility to get the exempted category in employment visas.
  • Creation of a job bank.
  • Create awareness (Marketing) of IIESL among organization in UAE for employment opportunities.
  • Sharing of best practices through various forums.
  • Discounts for educational programs.
  • Continuing Professional development (CPD) programs through seminars, work shops and presentations.
  • English language programs.
  • Access to various databases and web based programs.
  • Educational and sports activities for children.
  • Social and family gatherings.

Q7. What is CPD (Continuing Professional Development)?
A7. CPD is the means, by which members of professional associations maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities required in their professional lives.

The following provides some examples of modes of CPD:

  • Action-based learning - A systematic, structured approach to the solving of problems in the workplace.
  • Work based development - Background reading, research or preparation required to tackle a new area of work
  • Conferences - Conferences, seminars, workshops or other technical and professional events and meetings including in-house training.
  • Qualifications - Courses leading to a qualification.

It is recommended that mixes of the above modes are used to give a wider learning experience. Following sources have been used to prepare the Q & A.
